CODEINE is a derivative of the opiates and is
synthetically produced via the methylation of morphine
Although codeine forms a very small
constituent of morphine, it is not viable to extract codeine from
morphine and today's codeine is synthetically manufactured

APPEARANCE |
Essentially, in its raw form codeine is a
white powder. Because of pharmaceutical manufacturing,
codeine is normally included in medication and this forms part of
a medication and is seldom available on its own, so one is not
aware of its appearance
PRESENTATION |
Because codeine is a pharmaceutical drug, it
comes packaged as a tablet or capsule or in a liquid format
EFFECT |
Codeine is a prescription medication which relieves mild to
moderate pain. Codeine is also available
in lower dosages in OTC (over-the-counter) medical preparations
Because it is a prescription drug for pain
relief, the brain sees it as a "reward" and if the patient does
not follow doctor's orders very closely, the power of the mind
will shift and tell the patient that it is OK to continue to use
the medication
THAT is where the danger lies, and THAT is
where the addiction starts |
It is very difficult for a codeine user to
accept that he or she has an addiction problem with this drug |
